A variety of CCD astrometric data was used to predict the location of the path for the occultation of the star we have denoted “Tr176” by Triton, which occurred on 1997 July 18, and was visible from locations in northern Australia and southern North America. A network of fixed and portable telescopes equipped with highspeed photometric equipment was set up to observe the event, with the following observational goals: (i) mapping the central flash (to

Upper Limits on Gaseous CO at Pluto and Triton from High-ResolutionNear-IR Spectroscopy
We observed Pluto and Triton with the CSHELL echelle spectrograph on the Infrared Telescope Facility in April and July 1996, in an effort to detect the R(2), R(3), and R(4) rotational lines of the 2-0 vibrational transition of gaseous CO. As no lines were detected, we derived 3-σ upper limits on the average widths of these three lines of 0.040 cm−1 for Pluto and 0.028 cm−1 for Triton. The corre...
متن کاملNear-infrared spectral monitoring of Triton with IRTF/SpeX I: establishing a baseline for rotational variability
We present eight new 0.8 to 2.4 μm spectral observations of Neptune’s satellite Triton, obtained at IRTF/SpeX during 2002 July 15– 22 UT. Our objective was to determine how Triton’s near-infrared spectrum varies as Triton rotates, and to establish an accurate baseline for comparison with past and future observations. The most striking spectral change detected was in Triton’s nitrogen ice absorp...

متن کاملStellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

Thunderstorms are among the first meteorological phenomena, which have attracted human attention. Thunderstorms with rain showers and storms accompanied by hail and their role in causing sudden floods, both in terms of agriculture and human and financial losses, have been noticed by researchers. Rain hail of bullets or pieces of ice ascends very high in elevation due to the weather conditions a...
